Mario Builder is a freeware Mario level editor developed by Ting_Thing between 2008 and 2011. This level editor is fairly simple to use, it features a lot of powerups, blocks, sceneries, items, and even more than 10 different bosses. It even has a Super Mario Bros. 3-based world map editor and a unique feature: a main menu editor.

Based on Hello Engine III, Mario Builder is one of the best Super Mario level editor softwares around the web.

Features

As stated earlier, Mario Builder features a good bunch of elements that can be placed in an exhaustive level editor.

• SMB1-to-SMW tilesets, including terrain and regular blocks.
• SMB3 and SMW backdrop sceneries.
• More than 15 different powerups, including Blue Shell, Gold Flower, and even Bowser Suit, a custom one.
• SMB games’ exclusives, like Huge ? Blocks from SMB3, Yoshi from SMW, and turnips from SMB2.
• SMB3-like world map editor, featuring also some elements from SMW world map, like Switch Palaces, and Ghost Houses.
• Main Menu editor, where you can write your own game’s name, and place backdrops whatever you like, and choosing music.
• Intro cutscene editor, ala SMW.

Pros and Cons

Here’s my personal list of pros and cons of this level editor. Feel free to follow my suggestions, if you’re searching for something like this.

• PROs
  • Very large amount of elements to place;
  • Inclusion of good bunch of alternative editors, like world map, main menu, and cutscene editors;
  • Up to 8 different games can be created;
  • Possibility of uploading own custom elements, music, and background.
• CONs
  • Game’s physics are hard to manage and play;
  • If used on old PCs, or computers with too low RAM, the game can lag a lot;
  • Some options like custom autoscroll, or non-vertical levels, are lacking;
  • Tile selecting is too narrow. An user must click left / right / up / down arrow keys in order to change every single element.
